Hello! I’m currently almost there with a new kitchen design and having a builder come over to quote for the fitting on Thurs. Can I ask 2 really basic questions?!

    1. Do builders usually take away the old kitchen or do I need to find someone else to do that? All the big kitchen companies do this but I’m trying to keep costs down and do DIY Kitchens and find my own builder

    2. I need the lights re-doing too (I have 35 spotlights in a 4x5m kitchen and no switch near the door!). Any advice on when to time the electricians to come to do that work with when the old kitchen comes out and the new one goes in?

Builder reckons end Sep/Oct for his availability and I’m trying to minimise disruption (it’s also the room I work from!).

All help / advice on my v first renovation project welcome! Thank you so much

    1. Most independent builders will remove the old kitchen, but it’s not always included — some charge extra or expect you to handle disposal. Just ask if rip-out and waste removal is included in the quote.

    2. Get the electrician in right after the old kitchen is removed and before the new one goes in. That’s the easiest time to move switches, reduce spotlights, run cables, etc. Once units are fitted it’s a pain.

So the usual order is: rip-out → electrics/plumbing first fix → kitchen install → electrics second fix (lights/sockets connected).

Planning it that way keeps disruption down and avoids rework.

How exciting — kitchens are disruptive but so worth it in the end 😊

Most builders will remove the old kitchen, but always double-check it’s included in the quote. Sometimes disposal is extra, sometimes not.

For the electrics, the electrician normally comes in twice:

Once after the old kitchen is removed to move wiring and switches

Then again at the end to fit everything off

And yes… 35 spotlights is a lot for that size room! You’ll probably get a nicer feel by reducing them and adding some softer layered lighting instead.

If you’re working from the room, I’d ask for a clear timeline of when power will be off and how long the space will be unusable — that helps massively with planning.

You’re doing the right thing asking these questions now
