Email from Octopus about rising costs
Posted by Aaron Park on April 22, 2026 at 12:03 pmHas any one else had the message from Octopus today (didnt take them long)
Electricity up by 2p per unit off peak and peak and 2p perday on the standing charge from 1st of May on Intelligent Go. Citing Iran conflict.
Back to more than pre – April prices when you factor in the standing charge which has gone up by 3p per day in the space of a month ( 1p a day April 1st, and another 2p May 1st) and they cut export rates from 15p to 12p 1st April.
Not so different from the pack now.

And you can guarantee it won’t be coming back down again!

Considering lots of people had a massive reduction about 2 weeks ago, why would you say that?
-
How much did my taxes increase to pay for that reduction in my energy bill? I’ll tell you – it was 0%. The fact some charges were moved to general taxation, doesn’t mean you’re not saving that money. It is a direct saving.

I fail to see how the Iran conflict can affect the standing charge. The cables are already there.
Frankly I think standing charges need to be capped soon. I pay more in standing charges per month now than I used to pay for both gas and electric per month
-
the diesel going into the DNO pickup trucks wasn’t already in stock.
-
-
the cables may be there, but the network/grid needs upgrading. According the Octopus the increase in network costs that they have to pay to the DNO is around £66 per customer for the coming year. Differernt regions need different levels of upgrade, so standing charges vary by region.

They changed the tariff well before for anyone new so it was coming to everyone sooner or taker.
-
It was all a con anyway, prices going up before April 1st when discounts due and going up more than being reduced. If you were already on a fix it worked out well
-
I got the email tonight ..they are offering instead a 12 month fixed but that’s at 8p overnight and 33p day rate..so I think I’ll hang on to Variable for now ..I expected the April drop to only last until Julys price cap announcement but I suppose with all the uncertainty it’s sort of inevitable that they moved early ..
-
Prices are rising by around 14% in July due the war in Iran and likely another few % in October. You might want to check if it’s worth fixing, if they are still offering fixes (many suppliers have pulled fixes now).
