    In roof system

Have now received 5 different quotes. I like a few of the companies i’ve met. The one i probably most wanted to work with has come back with an in-roof system at 6kwp. The other 4 have suggested on roof at 8kwp. All are around £11-12k for 8-17kwh batteries. All are reputable local companies so i’m not concerned around their credentials. All seem on the higher price bracket compared to what people here suggest you can get. But i’m not sure getting a 6th quote will be different. All would satisfy my current energy needs.

The reason for the post is around the In roof system. This was unexpected and is stated to be due to the roof pitch being 11 degrees. Its clearly added cost, reduced panel number and output/efficiency. The in roof system ROI is 14 years. The on roof systems are between 6-10 years.

Whilst ROI isn’t everything and clearly is a little artificial. The in roof system looks far less efficient. Is the pitch of 11 degrees really that big a deal and why has only 1/5 companies made it a problem?

What in-roof system is proposed? If it’s GSE Integration then the minimum pitch is 12 degrees; possibly splitting hairs here but worth knowing.

      16 solfit 425w panels.

Tbf the company have raised a concern which seems valid re the pitch. Just thought seeking opinions may help me filter out the noise.

What roof covering have you got? Most hooks are designed for 15 degrees minimum. But then again so are most roof tiles.

so its’s a garage roof. 60m2 south facing sloping back to front. Clay tiles onto bitumen coated felt. Like that when we moved in. Watertight and agree with you it isnt building regs re slope and tiles.

In roof is more expensive than on roof, I had quotes from several companies for each way and in-roof is always more expensive, however if it was a new roof then the extra cost would be the savings on the roof tiles

In roof is around 3% less efficient but looks better, the panel efficiency should be almost the same as your just installing panels over the top of GSE trays, it’s likely you can get a row less panels as the trays are bigger than the panels. I have in roof system and on roof was never a consideration for me as how it looks is the most importantl.

In roof is more work as most of the roof needs to be stripped off to mount the trays and on hot (sunny?) days the efficiency drops off a few %. However it does definitely look better imho. Make sure the combination of roof tray and solar panel are certified to work together (for MCS). You can probably get closer to the verge too as the wind protection will be less demanding.

so in summary, in roof is more expensive and less efficient – is that correct?

If so I know what I’d be doing

In terms of overall pricing how do the quotes compare to the £1k/kwp if solar & £500/kWh of battery market price?

so it is just over that pricing guide. The on roof quotes are all about bang on except one which is a fox system with a 17.5kwh battery. But if due to the roof being <15 degrees i have to settle for an in roof then it doesnt really matter as the others will all change when their installation team see the garage roof.

My question to installers on here – is the pitch of my roof an absolute no for on roof systems and MCS compliance?
