Thinking about converting your garage or upgrading a room? Don’t overlook one of the biggest game-changers… floor insulation.

It’s one of those things people often rush or try to save money on, but getting it right makes a huge difference to comfort, energy bills, and meeting Building Regs.

Here are the main options to consider:

    • Rigid insulation boards (like PIR)

A popular choice for garage conversions. Great thermal performance with minimal thickness, ideal if you don’t want to raise floor levels too much.

    • Insulated floating floor

Insulation laid over the existing slab with chipboard or screed on top. Quicker to install and works well if you’ve got enough height to play with.

    • Suspended floor insulation

If you’re building a new floor structure, insulation can go between joists. Good for airflow and moisture control when done properly.

Every project is different, and the “best” option depends on your existing floor, ceiling height, and budget.

If you want a full breakdown of costs, build-ups, and what works best in real UK garage conversions, I’ve put everything into a simple step-by-step guide.

For garage conversion floor insulation, the usual method is:

DPM on the existing concrete slab

    PIR/XPS insulation boards tightly fitted

Taped joints to avoid cold bridging

    18–22mm T&G chipboard/OSB on top

    Edge insulation around the perimeter

It’s the most common way to meet Building Regs without digging out the floor. Just make sure to check height levels and damp before starting.
