Stud wall build up explained
One of the most common questions people ask when planning a garage conversion or internal wall is: “What should the stud wall build-up actually be?” There’s a lot of conflicting advice online, so here’s a simple breakdown of a typical setup used when creating a habitable space.
A common approach starts with a treated timber sole plate fixed to the floor, with timber studs at 400mm or 600mm centres depending on the design. Between the studs you would normally install insulation, often PIR boards or mineral wool depending on the wall type and thermal requirements.
On external walls, a breathable membrane is typically installed on the cold side to protect the structure while still allowing moisture to escape. Internally, a vapour control layer is usually fitted on the warm side of the insulation to help prevent condensation forming inside the wall.
Once that’s in place, plasterboard is fixed to the studs, often using foil-backed or insulated plasterboard if extra thermal performance is required. For areas that need fire protection or acoustic performance, double plasterboard or fire-rated boards may also be specified.
The exact build-up can vary depending on whether the wall is internal, external, single skin brick, or part of a garage conversion, so it’s always important to check what building control expects for your specific project.
If you’re planning a garage conversion and want a clear breakdown of wall build-ups, insulation options and building regs guidance, I’ve put together a step-by-step guide that explains it all in plain English.
You can grab the guide here-
