  • Can this wall be removed?

Posted by Zoe Collins on January 4, 2026 at 10:03 am

Hi, is there any way to know for definite if this wall can be removed? As you can see from the photo. The floorboards upstairs run left to right on the photo and the joists run top to bottom. So downstairs the wall we want to remove is in line with the joists. Can we just remove it or do we need to check anything first? House is a tip until works done lol

    Thanks

best way to find out is get a builder to look or if you are doing it yourself expose the brickwork or stud work and see if the joists hang on it

Just because the joists are in line, it doesn’t mean that a wall isn’t structural.

You should always check with a structural engineer to be sure.

If the drawing is accurate the place to start looking is under the floorboards in the doorway of bedroom 2 and it’s built in wardrobe. Be careful when sawing through the boards in case there are pipes or cables underneath.

I am a structural engineer. Consult a structural engineer and he must do a site visit. If that wall is solid it is supporting the rear wall laterally, as in against wind. Just because nothing sits on it directly does not make it non-structural.

If you’re ever planning on selling the house, you’d need prove the wall wasn’t structural-or if it is, then the effects of taking it out have been mitigated. A consensus of FB people offering advice won’t count.

Get it checked properly by a structural surveyor, it’s worth the cost to rule out costly errors.
