  • Advice for storage in a garage truss roof

Posted by Eric Clegg on March 12, 2026 at 5:39 pm

Hi folks im looking for a little advice. I’m wanting to store some light items above the garage floor. (Christmas tree, empty suitcases, lawnmower) nothing heavy. Has anyone done something similar. Im wondering about reinforcing parts of the trusses where I’ve screwed battons down and extra bracing up top. Im at the stage were I can remove whats fitted easily before I go any further. Roof span is around 6m X 6m. Standard W trusses. Thank you

You need to support trusses beam from underneath. This is what I done for my garage

I work in the construction industry of which designing joists and trusses is what I do. So I know what they’re designed to take

Do a simple calculation first. Those beams are not designed to carry any weight at all. Everyone says “just Christmas trees,” but it ends up being boxes full of books and other items. Do it right in the first place. He asked the question; I gave my view. That’s all.

Rule for trusses for static loading on a standard truss at 600mm centres is 60kg per truss. So a 5 truss spread like that can support upto 300kg. no need to add additional supports. Don’t forget, a house has plasterboard, skim finish, light fittings etc added to that structure and they’re fine.

that’s what got me thinking about it, obviously in a house you have walls which can support the trusses. Whereas my garage only has the perimeter walls. I have 11 trusses in total. Im adding flooring spanning 2metres over the mid section with 6 battons evenly spaced and braced to the trusses and to support the floor. I won’t be walking around there very often it’ll likely put the ladders against it just to grab something.

people think that trusses are supported by walls. In modern houses (where you have stud work walls upstairs) The only load a truss will allow for is the wall plates on the external wall. Which means all of the plasterboard on the entirety of your upstairs is suspended from the trusses so no issues with general storage like you’ve shown
