    Moving the gas meter.

We had a house extension 3/4 years ago. I had the gas meter moved from inside the house to outside the house by a friend who works for a gas company.

Today we had a visit from someone from British gas.

They said its illegal and will be sending me a fine and a bill so they can get it done properly etc

    Anyone else had this?

Was the friend able to sign-off and certify the work? If not, the gas board are within their rights to pursue it.

You did not get the gas company to do it so you are in the wrong and so to the person that did it.

They can’t fine you if it’s done by a professional qualified gas certified engineer, as you have never signed a contract with them like every body your name is passed on to the company’s from old home owners

unfortunately they can become you have to apply for permission to have it moved and the work can only be carried out by them.

The meter is the property of the supplier, a regular gas safe engineer cannot relocate it, it has to be done by the suppliers contractors.

The only exception to this is a small amount of movement where the bracket can be moved but ECV remains in original position

I had mine moved also by a friend who was gas safe, but it doesn’t matter you aren’t allowed to move it.

I wasn’t prepared to pay the £2500 to get them to move it, it only cost me £300!! Luckily I got away with it and sold the house with no issues.

I bet a neighbour has reported you!!!!

My understanding is that you don’t own the meter, so it’s not yours to move.

I’m currently having a side extension and the gas meter needed moving so it was still on an external wall. Should of been over £1000 but the builder knew someone who could do it for £200. It’s basically the northern gas guys doing it for cash on the side. He’s told me if anyone asks I don’t know who moved it or how much it was – just that it was part of the package of having the extension done and that is what I will say if anyone asks

Should have said it wasnt me and the meter has always been there. Did you admit to having it moved?

My meter was surface mounted in a box outside my house. I called my gas supplier at the time (E-on, terrible company) to ask if it could be moved. Long story short I removed it on the day and engineer was coming out to do some maintenance, cut a hole in my house and fitted a flush mount box. Told E-on of my plan before the engineer got there and in typical fashion they were very vague in communicating my needs with him but he reinstalled the meter in my newly fitted box, did the other jobs he had to do and left. E-on charged me 50 quid from memory. Box cost slightly less than that. Could have done it all myself but feel I covered my arse by telling them and getting them to refit it.

I had something similar. I had my gas meter removed. Got a quote from SGN. They wanted to cap it off in the road. An automated quote system. £2500. I spoke with Octopus and the removed the meter and capped it for free . They did mention SGN might want it removed and capped off outside the house. I said let wait and see. Been 4 years now. Not worried.
