Structural Engineer Costs in Cumbria
Posted by Peter Delaney on January 4, 2026 at 12:19 pmHello! Can anyone please share typical costs for a Structural Engineer? We are reroofing a one-storey extension and knocking a wall down between a kitchen and dining room.
Had one come out and told me £400 but then sent a follow up quote for £995 plus VAT. Is this reasonable?
Does a Structural Engineer have to visit the site or can the calculations be done via the plans?
TIA for any advice

Depends how much work there is to do and how far to travel etc. I would have thought for calculations for a few beams, masonry checks, foundation checks, and a local site visit between £600 to £1200 plus VAT. Where do you live?

Needs to visit the site but if an architect prepares the drawings then these should do

£800 – £1500 depending on number of steels and roof type. They have to pay a hefty insurance to cover the liability for their calculations

All depends on how much work is involved. They may have got back to the office and realised the work is more involved than they initially thought.
A site visit is always beneficial as they will have a much better idea of the existing structure and load paths. Even with a site visit there may still be unknowns.
For one beam around £500 plus VAT would be reasonable, but perhaps they’ve realised more beams will be required or a box frame needs to be designed, hence the additional cost.

A quote of £995 + VAT is on the higher side but not unheard of—typical costs for structural engineers in the UK range from £400–£700 depending on project complexity, site visits, and calculations. For knocking down a wall and reroofing, many engineers charge extra if they must inspect in person. Some calculations can be done from detailed plans, but a site visit is often recommended to confirm load-bearing details and safety

There are online companies that do structural calcs/plans from plans.
