I’ve just had a quote for a structural engineer – ground floor rip out and 6m extension.

    £3,120!

I expected a fair whack of a bill, but wow!

Am I being tight here or is this a little too much?

Advice please and recommendations if I’m being taken for a ride

What has the structural engineer quoted to do ?

In normal circumstances structural engineers are employed alongside architects to do the structural calculations and technical drawings which form part of your full set of drawings for your build team.

I paid far less for mine for a full refurb, chimney steel at roof level, opening up downstairs and a mansard .

    I’m in London

We got SE drawings and calcs for a single storey flat roof extension and ground floor reconfiguration on our detached house, involving removing the entire back wall of the house and adjusting /removing a couple of other internal load bearing walls. We paid around £1250, that was including a site visit at the outset to chat through our requirements (which was really useful as apparently there were different options). We had another quote at a similar level but without the site visit. We’re in Surrey. Yours does seem high. Is getting another quote an option?

We are east London and paid not much more than your quote for both our architect and structural engineer for a 2 bed loft dormer conversion and a kitchen side return (10 x 2.5m). That being said it was very ‘standard’ and we are one of the last houses on the street to have it done, so broadly it’s a copy and paste of others designs and a check on the calcs.
