Self done G99 applications.
Posted by Zoey Hyde on January 14, 2026 at 2:00 pmSelf done G99 applications.
Before I spend too much time and possibly waste others times with quoting systems.
Is it possible for me simply find out what we can export via a g99 application?
Just don’t want to waste my time or others time if its not possible
Thanks

You will need to specify what inverter you plan to use on the application. Can (proven) cause confusion later down the line if the installer recommends another one to install.
Personally i wouldn’t recommend an installer based on export, those tariffs can be pulled at any time and if you are gaining your payback from that you could have a massively over sized system for your needs.
Have a word with a local installer with a good reputation and proof of works, they’ll be able to advise you properly

The only formal way to know is to apply.
It should take a competent installer about 10min to complete and submit a G99 application… so it’s not really a big waste of time.
I do have certain areas I install regularly in, and therefore the applications are picked up by the same agent over and over again.
On occasion with larger systems/ complicated set ups in the same areas I have called these agents directly to get a bit of rough idea of what’s doable. But this isn’t guaranteed and is still subject to a formal G99 application which could return a different result.
In short, apply and you’ll find out.

It is possible for you to complete the application yourself but challenging if you’re not electrically minded and don’t have a system design as you really need to know the proposed inverter details and specifications including ENA references.
A lot of companies will carry out a design and submit an application on your behalf for a small fee at worst and included in the price of any quotation. Don’t fear the DNO reply too much. In 16 years I’ve only had two forced design changes. They may well limit export to the grid but that doesn’t generally have a huge impact on the financial performance of the installation.

You can do the G99 yourself. But you have to specify the exact inverters you want to install. My DNO (UK Power Networks) was very generous and approved 13.6kW with no export limit.

Do a fast track application. It’s not difficult apart from doing a schematic of the planned install but the key bit is the inverter model, capacity etc. Only took a week when I did it and even got a call from the network guy to check a couple of points and got 7.5kw export limit.
