Thinking of getting battery storage
Posted by Alan Smith on April 16, 2026 at 5:45 pmThinking of getting battery storage
So I am thinking of getting battery storage. But just a bit confused. I have intelligent octopus Go, so it automatically set the schedule in the cheap night time. My question is. Will it still charge my car and move the cheap rate to my home battery storage at the same time. The battery I am looking at is the Fox ESS EP12 11.52kWh.

Think of it this way , anything you have plugged in no matter what time will use electric. So yes it will charge anything but plugged in at cheap rate . It’s not selective as in your fridge and everything else turns off
-
Well you always get the cheap rate between 11:30am till 5:30am. So you would simply set the battery to charge between then.
The battery wouldn’t be able to know when IOG is giving a cheap window, no.
There is an app called Simple Solar with a SunSynk which actually can track when IOG is giving cheap windows, it’s around 95% accurate I’ve found. But either way you should be able to just charge overnight.

If you charge your battery between 11.30 and 5.30 it will be cheap. In addition the first 6 hrs of IOG scheduled car charging and any other load including batteries during that scheduled 6 hrs will also be cheap. Note If the 7th hour of car charging is within 11.30-5.30 car charging over 6 hrs won’t be cheap when iOG start to enforce their 6 hr fair use policy in the coming months.

Just need to be aware that if IOG has a slot outside of 11.30-5.30, it may drain the battery.

The cheap rate 23:30 – 05:30 is when you charge the battery, home assistant can program the battery to charge outside those times when extra charging slots are awarded.

This question gets asked a lot, on various forums and groups.
The answer is Home Assistant. Once set up correctly, it’s 100% reliable and will get the best from your battery on IOG
-
“the answer” isn’t Home Assistant – it is just one of many answers.
If the EV charge point is wired correctly (split from the main house load by a Henley block) and the inverter CT is placed correctly then no automation is required
-
Because it’s a lot more expensive. My average unit price over 12 months on IOG is likely to be well under 10p. Cosy makes sense if you don’t have an EV though.
-
I get your point, however if the battery is sized correctly you don’t need to top up the battery charge during one of the dynamic slots. After all you do need to have the battery size for a full days capacity as it won’t always be topped up during the day and you don’t want to have to pay peak rate if the battery isn’t large enough
-
Yes, that will work, but you’ll not be taking full advantage of the “bonus” IOG cheap rate slots.
Putting the CT clamps for the charger and house battery in the correct places will prevent the car discharging the house battery, but it won’t make the house battery charge during the cheap slots.
Home Assistant will do this.
I reckon I’m saving an extra £200 to £300 a year by topping up my battery in the afternoon whenever I get a bonus slot.
It’s effectively making my 12KWh battery work like a 20+ KWh battery at zero cost

HA is likely best when on a dynamic tariff like Agile, but on IOG i have fixed times charge and discharge times & rates for the house batteries, admittedly I need to change the discharge times/rate 3 or 4 times a year. The only minor irritation is occasionally if I get an EV schedule with ‘additional slots’ is that my export then goes to the EV.

Yes…and you will benefit..
Just ensure you have a suitable sized battery to cover your daily winter use…
Get the battery wired so that the car charger doesn’t see it…
