Thank you for the comments on my first post from a couple of days ago. Since then I have had my first quote from a local installer (see below) and would appreciate your thoughts on it please? I’m still awaiting a couple of more quotes. Please note I am a total newbie when it comes to solar so please be gentle. Thanks in advance.

I can only speak about what I have installed, I got 6kW inverter, 16 panels and 12kWh heated battery for £8400 so looks a little high

Seems a bit pricey for fox gear and a small number of panels. I got 20 Aiko panels, 6kW Sigenergy inverter with a 9kWh battery for £10k

did it include EPS? Cost is surely in the battery not the panels so actually it’s not very comparable

I’d definitely ask them a few more detailed questions before going ahead.

    For example:

    – is each string individually protected or just connected straight into the inverter?

    – is there a separate string box included to isolate and protect the system?

    – is proper earthing and bonding part of the installation?

    – what kind of DC/AC cabling and protections are they actually using?

    – what brands are they working on other than Fox? I mean cables, surge protection, isolators, RCBOs, staff like that (cause these small differences will protect your installation)

As far as I know fox is generally considered more of a mid-range option, so it’s not a bad system, but it’s also not top-tier. A lot of quotes look good on paper, but these details are what really matter for safety and long-term reliability.

I’ve seen installs where everything is done as cheaply as possible behind the scenes, and you wouldn’t even know from the quote. So ask questions whenever you can, it’s definitely worth spending more time before purchasing a system that is on your house for years.

Highly recommend speaking to companies like Passive Instal – they seem to focus more on explaining everything properly rather than just pushing a sale, so at least you can compare and understand what you’re actually getting.

    Good luck!

I just installed 20 aiko 465 3s and Tesla pw3 with gateway for 11.5 so yours is on expensive side

Hi seems high for the system and what you are getting, I would suggest you look at sigenergy battery system with aiko panels and id increase the inverter size. Also I get a good rate from my installer due to the amount I’ve spent with them for our system. Happy to share Brett Horlock details from Foreuk.co.uk

Looks fairly decent I’d say, what roof covering do you have? Slate or concrete tiles?

Not the worst pricing ive seen, looks like you have room for more panels, would try to use all the space available. Also re the EPS socket, you could have a Gateway for not much extra.

Do you have an EV? If not, have you thought about how much it will cost to charge your battery?

With panels alone, you could cut your use in half leaving about 1.7 MWh. On an EV tariff you could save about £300 a year, but it’s worse if your tariff costs more than 7p. Bear in mind it is no longer sensible to export any battery excess to the grid so this is a maximum value and as no one uses their battery perfectly, you might not get even that

I would ask them to itemise your quote so you can see what you’re paying for the battery

Fairly reasonable pricing, could certainly get it a bit cheaper if you searched a bit more but if the local installer has a good reputation/standard of work and you feel like the support service would be good then seems decent.
