The talk of plug-in balcony solar has got me thinking. I’ve just had my 80th birthday and while I think I have fairly ‘green’ credentials I haven’t thought it worthwhile splashing out £thousands on a full solar array when I may not see out the payback period. Instead, I’ve ordered four second-hand 260W panels and would appreciate advice on how to get the most value out of them. Don’t worry I won’t be installing them on my roof but on the east and south walls of my garage. Thanks in advance.

Nice idea — a simple plug-in micro-inverter setup will give you the best value without big costs. Use all four panels with a suitable micro-inverter to offset your daytime usage. Mount the panels where they get the most sun (south is best, east helps mornings), keep them unshaded, and angle them slightly if possible. It won’t cover everything, but it’s an easy and cost-effective way to reduce your bills.

Thanks for those suggestions. The panels were going to be delivered today but it’s looking like Wednesday now.
