    Method statement.

    Risk assessment.

How it’s going to be prepared.

How it’s going to be mortar raked out.

ie: by mechanical methods or by hand tools.

What sand/lime mortar they propose. (Ideally it wants to be either hot lime mortar or lime putty based mortar for the best vapour permeability & flexibility).

    What aftercare they are providing.

ie: Hession covering & spray mist coating, churn brush tamping back.

Estimated time of the job completion/timescale, (Weather permitting).

What are the lead times to start the job (most specialists lime mortar pointers are usually booked up months in advance).

Is it a price or day work for the job.(ideally you want a price for the job with a detailed breakdown of what is involved).

A contract in writing of the works provided & costings, dated etc…

What kind of protection will be used, if any is needed in vulnerable areas…windows, doors, floors, roofs etc..

Ask what type of lime they will use. It took us two years to find someone good and willing to use the right materials… majority of lime specialists wanted to use NHL 3.5

may be a stupid question but what is NHL 3.5 and why is that bad/ what should I be looking for or is that area dependant?

NHL is not as breathable as hot lime or lime putty based mortar & they often mix cement in the ratio. You def don’t want any cement in the mix as your bricks will spall like ours did

I’d ask him if he knows how hard that particular stone is, and if that is guiding his choice of mortar and why….

Does it actually need doing, pics look not too bad unkess its cement. Is the paint limewash or plastic – if the latter i would take that off

So the white side with all the windows when it rains heavy I think water is getting in at the top of the chimney stack as the whole wall down that side (and every window) leaks. The paint is masonry paint so yes would like all that taken off. The other side with no windows has holes in so ideally that and the chimney on that side needs re pointing too.
