  • Do I need a new lintel above garage door opening?

Posted by Adrian West on December 24, 2025 at 10:05 am

Hi we are converting our garage , removed garage door ready to replace with French doors , does anyone here know whether a concrete lintel needs to be laid the width of the garage door opening or the full width wall to wall of the garage? We are building 3 course brick work and doors on top,

Needs to chop the brickwork out either side of garage door below ground level ideal to seat the lintel just laying it on to of concrete is not gonna take the required load

Expose the front slab if it’s over 100mm thick they allow you to build off that if not dig out a long channel and brickwork just below ground level and use a 6inch x 4inch concrete lintel. Check for gas, electric, water they often all come in from the street this way.

Your lintel needs 150mm bearing each side of the opening

We can help with this for french doors you normally need a full-width structural lintel, not just over the opening, we can assess the span and advise the correct lintel size. feel free to DM me.

I would assume you would treat it the same as if it was a lintel going in above the door. Ie opening plus150 each end toothed into brick work . That then links it all in and spans load .

the concrete lintel needs to be from Wall to wall I think I’ve got a photo for you to see. This will comply with building regs (though a lot of the time the floor is actually thicker than the lintel which if you ask me dosent make sense but hey ho)

You need to remove the bricks (under ground level) to fit the lintel from on brick pad to another.

Make sure you wear gloves as it’s a tight fit and we have busted our hands doing this over the years. Please feel free to private message us or call us and we will give you free advice
