    A question primarily for installers . . .

DNO application fees – we are seeing a fire sale increase in DNOs wanting extortionate fees for domestic G99 applications with most in the region of £100+VAT for up to 8kW and £250+VAT above 8kW. Obviously this leads to awkward conversations with customers.

My question is, has anyone figured out a work around or protest reply that works? It used to be that theoretically all G99s were chargeable but that view changed when applying for a domestic property. Have a missed a change in the rules or is this a money grab?

It’s probably down to the number of applications. When they were getting one or two a week, the engineers were probably expected to fit them in around their day job.

Now it’s probably a full time job.

definitely a valid point but I’ve long understood it’s a service that the DNO has to provide to a domestic end user FOC

I recently contacted SSEN about my DNO application, they informed me there is no charge for either the fast track or standard application.

And then there’s NPG, who make it up as they go along..

Never paid a G99 application fee yet in 5 years under 50kW and submit one at least every 2 weeks. And we have used NGED, SSEN , UKPN and ENWL and one tiny sub DNO in NGEDs area.

So no idea what you are talking about. Most likely a regional issue.

Which DNO is asking for this?

we haven’t had one for years but all of a sudden we’re getting them. So far, NPG, SPN, Lastmile, GTC and National grid are starting in April according to an email

I had a good conversation with a design engineer at Northern power grid about this. They are looking at standardising a set minimum fee for all G99 / Fast track applications where there will be a flat fee of £360 + vat. This is payable even if no further works are required or in the case of accept on existing. They said it’s not there yet but that’s the direction it looks to be going in.

We are in the Midlands using national grid and our g99 application self install was free about 20 months ago.

Wow, this is news to me and one to keep an eye on, especially with NPg as I mostly deal with them. It’ll be like rolling the clock back a few years before SGI came in. That said, in NPg’s case, if they’d fully integrated their systems with the ENA Connect Direct portal, which they’ve had plenty of time to do, they could have saved themselves and installers loads of time and no doubt expense.

I’d spend that as a customer if they’d got off their jackseys. I agreed Jan 25, they took well over the 45 days. My poor solar company came to place system this Feb to find the DNO had not done what they should and I was left with only panels up.

The DNO turned up last week to deloop and move the meter. That’s what stopped my company, the meter is getting moved and the supply is coming in from the other side of the house as it comes from my neighbour the other side currently.

They came last week and road map was wrong so they dug half road up to find the lamp wire only. Then they found the main wiring was in the road and it takes the county council 1w weeks so it’s at least June.

I do at least have my wiring moled through my garden, attached to sweey FA.

So glad I’ve got a similar system on my roof.

I started this shizzle back in something like 2021/22. Things have already come along so far that I feel like I wish I had just got an all in 1 with a smart ac-dc charger and topped up cheap night rate to dedicated sockets. No need for DNO then.
