Gas meter in a garage conversion?
Posted by Michael Davis on December 26, 2025 at 4:33 pmLooking to convert my garage into a room. Can the metre stay where it is. i.e in the room or does it need moving to an unoccupied space/outdoors? Thanks

You can get it moved but it might have to be done by Cadent and they have a wait list. When we enquired it was several months and the cost estimate was a couple of grand.

Can either box it in or build a full cupboard around it, can use the rest for storage.
We have the gas meter, consumer unit and boiler on our garage conversion

If you going through a proper way through building control you will have to move it outside where if there is the need for an emergency -eg leak or fire services they have to turn it off before entering the building -not all houses are like this but they are trying to do to all projects that require building control

If you can’t box it in then move it but from memory your supplier has to move it and the incoming feed but it’s expensive!!!

Mine was boxed in and because of the thickness of good insulation it hardly stuck out. It’s very expensive to move it outside. My conversion was through permitted development

We got ours moved to outside. It’s was around £800
