G99 application offer being less than what’s allowed under G98?
Posted by Simon Fielden on March 11, 2026 at 11:24 amHas anyone ever heard of a G99 application offer being less than what’s allowed under G98?
Spen have effectively said to my installer in reply to his G99 application that max export they will allow is 2.6kW however if we install under G98 they effectively can’t limit me to less than 3.68kW!
I thought the local grid here was under strain especially since there has been about a 50% increase of new houses built down our lane out here in the sticks over the last 20 years, with no reinforcement afaik, but I hadn’t realised it was that bad!
Not a happy bunny at all

For export? Yes. Happened to a client in 2022/23. And a 3 phase upgrade was needed and took 8 months all told between quote and going live due to DNO not being supper quick doing the upgrade works required.
Your property is most likely in a village with overhead power cables and what they call, “end of line” from the substation so very very problematic for pushing voltage rises up the chain.

Thanks yep that’s pretty much exactly how our power is deployed here poles all over the shop, probably just over twenty properties on our local transformer hanging off a pole in a nearby field!
I am about mid way from it and the end of the line

Yes, we just did a G98. The transformer got upgraded about 6 months later, got a 5+5 through on a fast track once the work was completed.

Yes. 7.5kw inverter but 0kw export or could do g98 route with 3.68 export. Wouldn’t even allow 7.5kw with export limited to 3.68kw. Northern power grid for reference

Yes effectively as best as I can understand I can have a 6kw inverter and 2.6kW export limit under G99 which also allow me to have a gateway
Or 2x 3.68kW inverters, one or both being export limited via G100 under the G99 fast track process. But I then can’t have a functional gateway i.e. I can have a gateway but it can’t be used for power cut protection!

The gateway is irrelevant to your export limit.
I think there may be some miscommunication here.

Very common for SPEN unfortunately. And they’ll want £300 odd quid plus vat for the privilege.

The route I am being offered by the DNO is either a single 6kW inverter and 2.6kW export via full G99 or 2x 3.68kW inverters, G100 export limited to 3.68kW via the G99 fast track process in theory that is great BUT… no islanding via Fastrack so no gateway, that is really annoying because we get lots of brief power cuts here!

Yes, had this a few years ago. Went down the G98 route, submitted the post installation notification, then instructed us to set export to 0W, due to property being at the end of the line and the network being knackered, requiring reinforcement. DNO then spent over a year trying to get access and wayleaves in place with a landowner. Nightmare PITA job!

Happened to us recently
Applied for 6kw inverter
Came back
2kw inverter with zero export at a cost of £326.20
Or
G98 for no cost

Bonkers.
I imagine your dilemma now is, go big and go after more self usage or stick to the 3.6kW inverter. If you are a high user or are looking at better future proofing your probably better going big with the lesser export
You may want to look into bring really clever exporting from a slightly oversized battery system

“Spen have effectively said to my installer in reply to his G99 application that max export they will allow is 2.6kW however if we install under G98 they effectively can’t limit me to less than 3.68kW! “
There is a difference, a G99 will allow you to connect a much larger inverter restricted to 2.7kW … that may be useful still for faster battery charging. With a 3.68kW G98 you can only connect a 3.68kW or smaller inverter, not a large one throttled back.
