Every merchant raises there prices in January. They have been doing it for years and years . Nothing new.

If you going to price a job in December. For sure come January you price will be out a minimum 5% on materials

The building trade are just the worst and should be regulated! My advice to you would be do your own homework. Don’t trust what you are told by tradesmen go to the source and get prices. It makes a difference. Visit one of the home building shows and talk to a QS for free and they will tell you what things cost.

Anyone looking to do a renovation should consider telling your builder you will buy the materials. You can go to one of these companies (there’s a couple out there) and you can source your stuff from them cheaper then your local builders yard… In fact that’s where they get stuff from at a fraction of the price because they buy in bulk.

Don’t be afraid to project manage your own build … you just need to speak to the right people and do your homework. It’s hard to find an honest builder these days( I’m sure they’re out there somewhere) ask questions all the time… you want to know where your money is going … it’s your hard earned money why shouldn’t you know. If a builder calls you a nightmare customer because you are a little savvy and ask questions… my advice avoid them like the plague! Good luck to anyone out there starting a new project… have faith in yourself, trust your instinct and never stop asking questions…

said from a bunker hidden in a secret forest eh

Just phone your local builders merchants & ask them about their new year price rises, literally every supplier to the trade increase their prices every new year

Your ignorance is staggering, suggesting a tradesman is trying to rip someone off, is said tradesman supposed to absorb the increase in your opinion ?

When a client wants to change things on a project then obviously a re-assessment of costings happens

I wonder if the client is still pondering the advancement of the work & tweaking the finer points therefore the tradesman is doing more unpaid work pricing the amendments with no guarantee of securing the job

I’d love to see you approach a QS at a trade show with a folder full of drawings & specifications & expect him to price it free of charge there & then

You are living in cloud cuckoo land sir

We allow 30 days from our quote to honour the price as materials are going up all the time

If you have a problem with the price change tell your builder to give u price for labour only and u will have to chase all suppliers and make sure materials are there when builder needs it. Trust me after a week u will have enough and pay the price what your builder has quoted.

Prices have gone up and plans have changed slightly, would say 100% it’s normal. My quotes have a 3 month time span if works are for a later date I only supply estimates not quotes

Yes, unfortunately quotes are now only good for a couple of months.

Gone are the days when you had a years work in front of you

if you have these doubts in your mind already about your contractors credibility then do yourself and the builder a favour and hire someone else.. this relationship will sour

A lot of suppliers increase prices in January. British Gypsum have increased around 3-4%, bricks and blocks have gone up around 8%. I haven’t seen any wild increases so far this year though.

The screenshot is from 2022, it just proves how much materials have gone up over the last few years.

This is Jewsons prices from 2022

This happens every January, especially brick companies and especially if turn over is down. They want to make the same money by selling less

Your builder is correct. Get him to reprice again if your concerned. When you get a price only valid for a few months. As materials cost charges all the time

thank you. We thought it was genuine from the builder but wanted to see if others were experiencing the same thing.

All of December i was receiving emails from all suppliers notifying me of price increases. Skips up 8%, that’s £1k over the year, my main merchant everything up between 7-11%

It’s hard for the client when they’re already paying a LOT for any project these days but our costs are fixed and increasing too. Vans, fuel, tools, materials, insurances, professional registrations/ qualifications, as well Labour wages both PAYE and CIS. We have no choice to remeasure and increase the quote value of a job that was quoted and accepted 6-9 months or more ago.

The key difference is if your contractor hasn’t put it on your radar. We have it specifically noted in our T&C’s.

We had plans to extend a few years ago but had to delay for reasons beyond our control, the costs them made sense to extend rather than move, but repricing now and costs of labour/materials mean its now better to move to gain the extra space. If that is replicated in other areas (appreciate prices/costs vary across UK so not everywhere…yet…) its going to have some serious implications for Trades/Builders through no fault of their own, although maybe good news for estate agents.

Importers/Manufacturers/Suppliers will need a serious rethink about prices soon or its going to get increasingly difficult for customers to afford work and affect hard working trades who have spent years building up skills and reputations to maintain the order book. Its not just building, its other industries too…whole economy is looking a mess. If you’re doing ok at the moment make sure you put a few quid by, If the country continues down this road it could turn and get very difficult very quickly.

Worked in builders merchanting for 50 years prices go up Labour goes up it’s a merry go round. Either seek an alternative like for like comparison or buy the materials yourself no easy answer with industry volumes down suppliers increase prices
